Peru's president said Wednesday that he will take his time in deciding whether to commute the sentence against a paroled New York woman convicted of aiding Peruvian rebels.
Lori Berenson was paroled last week after 15 years in prison, and has asked President Alan Garcia to commute her remaining sentence so that she can be deported. Terms of her parole call for Berenson to remain in Peru through 2015.
"I think this is a tempest in a teapot and I am going to take my time to think about" commuting the sentence, Garcia told reporters.
I'd be surprised if Garcia did not commute her sentence. It doesn't seem that Berenson or the Peruvian people want her there. However, if her sentence is commuted, I'm not sure if she can leave anyway given her one-year-old whose father is her lawyer and a former MRTA member.
